Surely if they polled supporters outside the grounds up and down the country, the majority would be in favour of getting rid. It's ruining the game.

Its being persevered with only to benefit the television viewer and armchair fan. Increases the number of talking points etc. They don't give two fucks for the matchgoing fans, most of whom would vote to scrap it as you say. It feels to me as if every goal we score gets checked for something, but surely it should only be stopping the game if there's a suspicion of a foul or a clear offside that the ref/linesman have missed? It's ruining the spectacle.

Think there's definitely something in this - e.g. it's being kept for the benefit of "spectacle" over everything else.

I suspect it "feels" that all of our goals are checked but, as I understand it, every single goal is checked across the country - again, feels slightly against the spirit of why it was brought in. They are actively then looking to disallow goals and they can be for the minutest of issues.

For me, I only think VAR should be able to disallow a goal if (a) there's a clear offside in the buildup, (b) the ball has gone out of play or hasn't fully crossed the line and (c) if there's been a instance of "foul play" that has materially influenced whether the goal was scored or not. E.g. you shouldn't be able to rule it out because of a minor infringement that happens 60 seconds earlier in a passage of play, 60 yards from goal when the defending team has time to regroup, etc...

Great article as always and loving the ‘95 Survivor Series reference - the first PPV I saw live on Sky Sports - parents’ had let us get Sky for the first time a couple of months earlier.
