Alfie Dorrington
The Dons add another defender to the books with the loan signing of Spurs' highly rated centre back...
Aberdeen’s defensive woes have not been hard to find in recent weeks, as the winless run extended to eleven games thanks to the goalless draw with Hearts on Sunday afternoon, one of the positives from the performance against the Gorgie side was that it generated a first clean sheet for the Dons since October.
Injury to Gavin Molloy & the form of Angus MacDonald and Slobodan Rubežić meant that the centre of defence was always going to be an area of keen interest for Jimmy Thelin in this January window. The Dons bolstering their options last week with the acquisition of Kristers Tobers, the Latvian with a comfortable first outing in red on Sunday afternoon alongside Sivert Heltne Nilsen, the Norwegian midfielder being utilised as an auxiliary centre-half once again.

Tellingly, when Tobers was withdrawn against Hearts (this a case of managing his minutes more than anything sinister) it was Dante Polvara who Thelin brought on to sit alongside Heltne Nilsen rather than MacDonald. If ever there was a sign that MacDonald’s days at Pittodrie are numbered, this was it.
For what it’s worth, barring his Rubežić-esque moment of madness in injury time, Heltne Nilsen put in an accomplished showing at centre-half and there may be merit in keeping him in that role alongside Tobers in the short-term.
If that is not a preference of Thelin’s, given that an injury or further suspension to Tobers and / or Rubežić would see us back to having to play one or more central midfielders at centre-back, it’s no real shock to see us dip back into the January market to bring in another option in this area.
Step forward Alfie Dorrington.
A commanding presence & a leader
19 year old Dorrington arrives from Tottenham Hotspur on a loan deal until the end of the season having signed a long-term contract extension at Spurs prior to making the move North. Dorrington, apparently, having chosen the move to Aberdeen ahead of a number of options to play in the EFL - you have to wonder if ex-Dandy, James Maddison had a good word or two about his time at Pittodrie that may have swayed the decision in our favour?
Dorrington joined his boyhood side at Under 13 level from (the wonderfully named) Cockfosters FC and his highly regarded at Spurs, the commanding centre-half making his first team bow for the Lilywhites in their 5-0 drubbing of Southampton in the Premier League in mid-December - coming off the bench for the final 13 minutes of that one.
Dorrington has been involved in numerous first-team squads for Spurs this season and has been an unused sub in Spurs’ Europa League visits to Ferencváros, Galatasaray and Rangers. He also was an unused sub in their FA Cup win over Tamworth Town on Sunday before travelling North.
Dorrington was a stand-out performer in the Spurs academy and he played an integral role as the Spurs U21s won a league and cup double last season. His leadership skills also evident by the fact that he has been selected as captain of the Spurs side & also the England U19 side on a number of occasions.
His development has been stunted by a series of injuries which has meant he has been restricted to only 388 minutes of football so far this season which may have also denied him the opportunity to go out on loan earlier this season.
A commanding figure in the air at well over 6ft in height - this will be music to the ears of Dons fans who have had to watch balls being thrown into our box through their fingers such has been the frequency of conceding goals from simple high balls into the box.
Dorrington also demonstrates a real range of passing - particularly in being able to hit accurate long-range passing up the pitch and on a cross-field basis - this could be of real potency for Jimmy Thelin’s side as we aim to get the likes of Topi Keskinen & others in behind defensive lines.
Natrually right footed, Dorrington is more than capable of playing on the left hand side of a centre-half pairing and has played there on a number of occasions for the Spurs U21s.
Lilywhite Rose, an independent Tottenham Hotspur Academy-focused account on X, when asked about what Aberdeen fans could expect to see from Dorrington said:-
…Alfie is an extremely confident, modern-day CB who has the ability to either play as an aggressive “stopper style CB” or as the front foot ball playing CB in a two…
Dorrington’s ability to play in this manner would appear to dove-tail well with the strengths of Kristers Tobers.
With two well-sized centre-halfs, there may be the concern as to recovery pace - we see it often enough in the Scottish Premiership where sides look to play the ball in behind a defence, looking for pacy attackers to exploit cumbersome defenders.
Kristers Tobers is known for having decent recovery pace and Lilywhite Rose indicates that this is not going to be an issue for Dorrington either:-
…Alfie has really good recovery pace & reading of the game so will be ready for pacy attackers looking to get in behind…
All very promising so far? The only real issue that appears to be in place is down to simple lack of game time & this being the first time that Dorrington has been sent out on loan, does that mean that it may take a bit of time for him to get up to speed & to get to grips with the hustle & bustle of the Scottish Premiership?
Dorrington’s manager, Ange Postecoglou is well versed in what the game in Scotland can be like and given how highly regarded Dorrington appears to be within the Spurs heirarchy, it seems unlikely that the gruff Aussie would send him out on loan to a league that he didn’t feel that the youngster could thrive in.
Lilywhite Rose also don’t seem to think this will be an issue:-
…I think Alfie’s mentality to work hard and look to get onto the front foot will serve him really well…
…I feel that Alife needs a consistent level of games to really showcase his ability, so hopefully this loan allows that to happen, for the benefit of all parties.
Upon his arrival, Dorrington has been allocated squad number 26 and goes straight into the squad for our visit to Ibrox on Wednesday evening.
Welcome Alfie.
COYR!
Aberdeen trying to set the record for players named "Alfie" on the books. Also "Don" in his surname? Match made in heaven.
