When Jimmy Thelin, officially, took charge of the Dons just over a year ago, there was huge interest in the expected turnaround in squad that the Swede would look to implement during his first season in Scotland.

Despite decent showings in the Conference League, reaching the League Cup Final and Scottish Cup semi-final, the prior campaign had been, in the main, disastrous. Barry Robson was left in the dugout for far too long, the Neil Warnock experiment was utterly farcical and it took the steadying hand of Peter Leven to guide Aberdeen to an, eventual, 7th place finish.

The fact of the matter is that the Dons had underperformed in the league and the squad appeared to need a significant level of surgery if we were to be in a position to compete for European places and to look at winning a trophy (SPOILER - we did) in Thelin’s first season.

So… in time-honoured tradition, Gary, Gavin & Graham give their thoughts on the players who made the move to Aberdeen over the course of last season and provide their scoring in traditional school report card style…

The Summer Intake

Gavin Molly

First in the door was Irish defender, Gavin Molloy.

22 year-old Molloy became our first signing of the summer window on 14th June 2024 - arriving for an undisclosed fee from (soon to be) Irish champions, Shelbourne FC on a three year deal.

On the face of it, Molloy appeared to be a signing for the future - at 22, he was, in central defensive terms, a relative baby and with 70 top flight appearances for Shelbourne under his belt, he appeared to be lacking that experience that you’d be expecting for a side aiming to push up to the upper ends of the table.
